California Theme Parks May Seek Legal Action Over Governor’s Phased Reopening Plans
Erin Guerrero along with a handful of California theme park executives held a press conference today to speak of their disappointment at the state of California’s theme park reopening plan which will see most theme parks closed for the duration of 2020. One of the topics that came up during the conference was whether or not theme park owners like The Walt Disney Company would consider taking legal action to dispute the plan. According to a piece on CNBC, Guerrero said, “All options are open at this point.”
Theme parks in California were dealt a devastating blow on Tuesday with the news that they would not be able to reopen the parks until their counties were in the minimal tier. This means less than one COVID-19 case per 100,000 residents.
To put this in perspective, Orange County, where Disneyland and Disney California Adventure are located, there are currently over 4.6 cases per 100,000 people meaning that the county is still considered in the substantial range. The cases would have to decrease to moderate and then down again to the minimal tier.

It’s simple.
Your county will be assigned a color based on:
– Case rate
– Positivity rateYour color determines how businesses can operate in your county.

“I don’t know when Orange County will enter the yellow (minimal) tier,” Dr. Mark Ghaly, California’s health secretary, said during a news briefing Tuesday.
The decision to stand firm on reopening guidelines spells devastating news for the theme parks. As a result we may see them take their struggle to the courts in an attempt to go against Newsom’s decision to keep the parks closed. During today’s press conference, all of the officials said they planned to continue conversations with Newsom’s administration in hopes of altering the guidelines.
