BREAKING NEWS: Broadway Theaters Will Officially Stay Closed Through May of 2021
It is a sad day for the Great White Way. Here at MickeyBlog we are so sad to share the news that Broadway theaters will remain closed through May of 2021.
According to Playbill.com, the Broadway League has confirmed that it won’t be until AT LEAST June of 2021 when Broadway theaters reopen. That means that the Theater District will have been dark for at least a year.
The trade association announced that all Broadway productions will remain closed through May 30th. This extends the hiatus these theaters are taking an additional five months. It was initially thought that the theaters would remain closed through January 3rd. The news regarding the shutdown is largely dependent on an expected vaccine rollout.
It should be noted that the dates given above ARE NOT actual dates when productions will resume but rather how far out refunds and exchanges will be offered for the time being. Broadway productions along with most performing arts institutions in New York have been shuttered since March 12th. That includes two Disney productions: The Lion King and Aladdin. If you’ve been following along with MickeyBlog then you know that Frozen was forced to announce its permanent closure at the start of the Broadway COVID-19 shutdown.
During the closure, the Broadway League has continued to be a vocal advocate of Congress’ Save Our Stages Bill as part of the Heroes Act which still remains stalled in Congress. Under the act, $10 billion in grants could be given to live venue operators to cover rent, payroll and more during the extended shutdown. .
League President Charlotte St. Martin said, “With nearly 97,000 workers who rely on Broadway for their livelihood and an annual economic impact of $14.8 billion to the city, our membership is committed to re-opening as soon as conditions permit us to do so.” She continues, “We are working tirelessly with multiple partners on sustaining the industry once we raise our curtains again.”
In the meantime, morale in the theater community is important which is why the League of the American Theatre Wing will still be moving forward with a digital version of the 2020 Tony Awards. Nominations will happen on October 15.
