Breaking: “Soul” To be Released Directly to Disney+ on Christmas Day
Pixar’s new movie “Soul” will skip theaters and drop directly to Disney+ on December 25th, 2020. The movie was originally supposed to be released in June, but pushed back to November 20th after the COVID-19 pandemic shut down theaters across the country and internationally. Reports cited Disney as looking at different release options for “Soul”.
The Release
Unlike “Mulan” where customers of Disney+ had to pay an additional fee of $30 in order to see the movie the day it was released to the streaming platform, “Soul” will be available to all users at no additional charge. The director of “Soul”, Pete Docter, had this to say of the Christmas Day release:
“The world can be an exhausting and frustrating place – but it’s also full of unexpected joys, even in seemingly mundane things,” Docter said in a statement. This Christmas present is certainly one of those unexpected joys.
The Film “Soul”
“We are thrilled to share Pixar’s spectacular and moving ‘Soul’ with audiences direct to Disney+ in December,” said Bob Chapek, chief executive officer of The Walt Disney Company. “A new original Pixar film is always a special occasion, and this truly heartwarming and humorous story about human connection and finding one’s place in the world will be a treat for families to enjoy together this holiday season.” (Variety.com)
“Soul” is about a jazz musician and middle school band director who travels to another realm to discover his true Soul and what it means to help someone else find theirs. The characters are voiced by actors, Daveed Diggs, Jamie Foxx and Tina Fey just to name a few.
If you are not already a Disney+ subscriber, now might be the time to gain access to the platform. With movies like “Mulan” and “Soul” being released directly to the service, and successes like “Hamilton” who knows what’s in store for Disney+ viewers?
