BREAKING NEWS: Disney World To Lay Off 8,800 Part-Time Union Employees
According to a piece just released by MyNews13, nearly 8,800 part-time union workers at Walt Disney World Resort are part of the over 28,000 layoffs at domestic parks that was announced by Disney Chairman Josh D’Amaro last week. This figures come directly from the Services Trades Council Union which represents nearly 43,000 employees at the resort.
The unions notified members of the layoffs on Wednesday which comes after days of setting in negotiations with Disney execs. The unions representing Disney released a joint statement yesterday. Here’s a copy of the release:
The statement reads “These are unprecedented times” and continues, “It is unfortunate anytime a worker is laid off and the mass layoffs that Disney is facing is extremely difficult for 1000’s of cast members.”
However, in its Facebook post on the negotiations, Local 737, a union representing hotel staff and food service employees announced that as of going to print no full-time workers will be laid off. This changed as a result of the negotiations with Disney originally looking to include 5,299 full-time employees in their layoff. .
In addition to the 8,800 employees mentioned above, Disney World also plans on laying off an additional 6,700 non-union workers. The layoffs are expected to go into place beginning on December 4th.
Our hearts go out to all of the cast members impacted by this news.
