“The Lion King” is Returning to the Pride Lands for a New Sequel
“The Lion King” is one of the most beloved movies in Disney history. Not only does it have some of the most recognizable characters in Disney’s films, but also an amazing soundtrack. And now, Simba and the crew will be back for a second look at what’s happening, or what has happened in the past at the pridelands.
Director Barry Jenkins, famous for “Moonlight” and “If Beale Street Could Talk”, had this to say about the sequel:
“Helping my sister raise two young boys during the ’90s, I grew up with these characters,” Jenkins said. “Having the opportunity to work with Disney on expanding this magnificent tale of friendship, love and legacy while furthering my work chronicling the lives and souls of folk within the African diaspora is a dream come true.” (Variety.com)
The movie will be like the 2019 Live-action remake, which was directed by Jon Favreau. The remake of the 1994 animated film grossed almost $1.5 billion at the box office. Jeff Nathanson, who wrote the screenplay for the 2019 version, is returning for the sequel. A release date has yet to be announced, and there have already been some delays due to COVID.
Rumor is that the film will include storylines about Simba’s father, Mufasa’s early years. Voice actors have yet to be announced. Jenkins and his partner Lulu Wang announced the film on Twitter. Because every Lion King announcement must include the iconic opening music.

The original Lion King is based loosely on the story of Shakespeare’s “Hamlet”. Even down to the evil uncle (Scar in The Lion King) and the coming of age of the main character. It is unclear how the new sequel will tie into this story, if the writers will pull from it at all.
