A Group of California State Senators Ask Governor Newsom to Allow Theme Parks to Reopen
A group of California State Senators and Assemblymen wrote a letter to Governor Newsom on Monday asking he release the guidelines for California theme parks to reopen. In a press conference a week ago, Governor Newsom said the guidelines would be released “very soon”. Theme parks including Knott’s Berry Farm, Universal Studios and Disneyland have been closed since March.
The Letter
The letter states:
Many indoor facilities are already operating safely at reduced capacities, with face covering and physical distancing requirements, and with heightened hygiene practices. Logic would suggest that since theme parks are controlled venues operating predominantly outdoors, that they too could reopen with similar health and safety protocols.
and;
Meanwhile, theme parks throughout the country and internationally have successfully reopened and one glance at the news makes it obvious that outbreaks simply aren’t being traced back to these theme parks. Your Administration has been rightfully reliant on data and science and, to date, the data and science do not point to theme parks as sources of
transmission.

California Re-Opening
Last Tuesday, Josh D’ Amaro (Chairman of Disney Parks, Experiences and Products) asked the Governor to allow theme parks to reopen stating “It is time”.
Monday’s letter was signed by the following state legislators: Tom Daly, Bob Archuleta, Kansen Chu, Tom Umberg, Chad Mayes, Sabrina Cervantes, Blanca Rubio, Patrick O’Donnell, Heath Flora, Adrin Nazarian, Phillip Chen, Pat Bates, Ling Ling Chang, Christy Smith, Cathleen Galgiani, John Moorlach, Tim Grayson and Richard Bloom.
The letter makes the point that California and Newsom have released guidelines for almost every part of business in the state except the theme parks. In response, the California Attractions and Parks Association released their own plan for reopening. The plan includes face coverings, social distancing and the emphasis on outdoor activities. The plan can be found here.
The plan also points out the data involved with the theme parks reopening in other parts of the country. Walt Disney World in Florida has been able to open successfully, and the legislators site them as an example.
Josh D’Amaro said it best, “We’re ready. And more importantly, its time.”
