Let’s Go to Animal Kingdom For World Gorilla Day
It’s World Gorilla Day Disney friends and if like me you are missing these stunning Animal Kingdom inhabitants, we here at MickeyBlog thought we’d share these images captured by Dr. Mark!
The western lowland gorillas that call Disney’s Animal Kingdom home are nothing short of spectacular. As you can see from the image above Zawaldi can been seen in the pictures eating and foraging his way around the Gorilla Falls Exploration Trail!
This year also marks the first birthday of baby Grace! Animal Kingdom welcomed Grace last May as part of the Species Survival plan which ensures responsible breeding of endangered species.
You can take a look at these splendid Animal Kingdom residents here:
Now for an important education less as lowland gorillas are a critically endangered species. This is largely as a result of habitat and poaching. This means conservation efforts are more important then ever With this in mind, Disney partners with organizations striving to protect gorillas in the wild in tandem with the Disney Conservation Fund. For more than a decade, Disney’s animal care team has shared their skills, resources and expertise with GRACE (the world’s only sanctuary for orphaned Grauer’s gorillas. )
Some of the ways that this collaboration has helped the gorillas population are definitely worthy of note. Disney is sending veterinarians, keepers and educators to the Congo to help establish facilities and assist with Gorilla care. Innovative solutions have come to light through this collaboration. For example, Disney’s vets and animal nutritionists have developed a special biscuit recipe for GRACE to help the gorillas get nutrients without getting tooth decay. The recipe was perfected first at Animal Kingdom first before being offered to those in the Congo.
So next time you’re at Disney’s Animal Kingdom be sure to take some time away from the hustle and bustle to appreciate these incredible creatures as part of the Gorilla Falls Exploration Trail.
