New Patents Filed For Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge
We’ve got some exciting news for theme park fans. Though it obviously hasn’t been the best year for Disney theme parks that hasn’t slowed the Imagineers down. According to a recent piece in Orlando Business Journal, Disney has filed new patents this month that show virtual realty technology!
As you can see from the images above, the patent filed by Disney concerns drone technology being used to generate various flow effects around a VR or augmented reality experience. These systems would be used to enhance the experience by using drones to generate effects around a user who is wearing a head-mounted display. These drones could be synchronized with VR/AR content that the guest is experiencing through their headset!
As The Orlando Business Journal explains this patent could also be used to move around a VR user adding wind sensations or other physical actions that lend believably to what the user is seeing in the simulation.
As you can see from the image above, items such as leaves, can be carried by the drone. That means the user could feel leaves or hear the rustling of leaves while watching the same element in the headsets.
“For example, a user of VR [head-mounted display] may be provided with a foam sword that makes contact with a foam proxy held by an [unmanned aerial vehicle] that acts like a floating drone trainer,” said the patent. This leads many insiders who have seen the patent to suggest that this technology is being developed specifically for Star Wars as part of Disney’s Galaxy’s Edge expansion maybe even the new Star Wars themed hotel (Galactic Starcruiser) currently under construction. Disney has previously discussed that the fully immersive hotel will have a lightsaber training activity for guests with droids involved.
As OBJ points out, there is no guarantee that patents will actually result in an end product. However, they do provide some awesome insights into what Imagineers are considering in terms of a “next frontier of the theme park experience.” This is a story that we’ll continue to follow closely here at MickeyBlog.
