Will All Three Sanderson Sisters be Back?
Hocus Pocus the sequel has been a long-awaited happening. The original film has gained a huge cult following since its release in 1993, but would a sequel even be worth having if viewers didn’t get the three original actresses playing the Sanderson sisters. Would it be the same? For many the answer is a resounding “no”, but no fear, it sounds like we may get all we wish for.
The Original Sanderson Sisters
The original Sanderson sisters were played by Bette Midler (Winifred), Sarah Jessica Parker (Sarah) and Kathy Najimi (Mary). The original three were resurrected by a teenage boy in Salem, Massachusetts. The boy, Max, spends the rest of the movie trying to steal the witch’s book of spells to prevent them from becoming immortal.
The Sequel
thedisinsider.com reported that the three actresses were in Zoom talks about reprising their roles. The source could not confirm any of the ladies have actually signed, but that these talks were happening. This is the first definite report fans have gotten since an instagram post a year ago from SJP.
The Original Writer
The original writer of Hocus Pocus, Mick Garris, gave this statement when asked about the Sanderson sisters: “I’m excited about it, but I really think the main reason the movie worked was the Sanderson Sisters, those actresses in those roles, those performances, that I think is the key to that movie’s long life. It was only modestly successful when it came out, at best. And I think they are the reasons that it’s still around since it came out in 1993. And I would love to see them return in it. I think that’s the plan, but I don’t know. I heard that that is what’s happening, and I believe it’s going to be for Disney+, but I’m not involved in it, which is fine. You don’t always want to revisit all of the touchstones of your past”. (comicbook.com)
So, as Halloween at Walt Disney World will look different this year with the cancellation of Mickey’s Very Scary Halloween Party, maybe fans will have some good news from the Sanderson sisters.
