What We Know So Far About the Next Thor Film
Its been a long time since we’ve spoken about Thor so we thought! Why not!? Its about time for an update on how things are going with the next film in the franchise “Thor: Love and Thunder.” As a recent piece in Total Film Magazine explains, the next instalment will be filled with a little bit of everything from A-Listers to space sharks and everything in between!
Best of all Chris Hemsworth will still be wielding the hammer and Natalie Portman returns as Jane Foster or should we say “Mighty Thor.” And finally, if you loved Thor: Ragnarok’s awesome balance between action a humor then you’re in luck as Taika Waititi is back in the directors chair for the film.
Release Date
So let’s cut right to the chase as the first thing many of you will want to know is when is the film coming out!? The release date has been moved to February 11, 2022. It was originally set to land next November but COVID-19 has obviously had a MASSIVE impact on Disney’s release schedule. However, if 2020 has taught us anything its that it’s all changeable so keep following along with MickeyBlog and we’ll keep you posted regarding any more shifts to the schedule.
Cast
We’ve already established the Hemsworth is back as the title character and we also know that Tessa Thomson is returning as the new ruler of Asgard – Valkyrie. Natalie Portman also announced during SDCC 2019 that she was returning to the MCU as Jane Foster who will eventually become – The Mighty Thor which is taken directly from the pages of Thor comics in the mid 2010s.
With the news that Taika Waititi is back in the director’s chair also comes the news that he will be reprising his role on camera as Korg. After that, its all rumor including the possibility of a role for Vin Diesel as Groot from Guardians of the Galaxy. Another new addition would appear to be Christian Bale who is playing an as yet unnamed baddie. According to the piece in Total Film, many fans are speculating that Bale will take on the role of Gorr the God Butcher who kills of deities across time and space.
The Script
Though little has been revealed about the plot other than Natalie Portman’s return and Space Sharks, Hemsworth has previously said that the script for the film is one of the best that he’s read in years. Taika Waititi added to that saying that it’s going to be Ragnarok turned up to eleven. In a previous piece with Entertainment Weekly, the director said, “If you take Ragnarok – which I feel was a very big, outlandish, bombastic film – we’re trying to double down on everything we did with that and create something that’s more crazy, more fun, and even more of a big, big adventure.”
We also know that Korg will be looking for love in Thor 4 while Space Sharks (taken straight from the comics) will serve as a “roadblock for those looking to get close to Gorr’s planet.” And as the Total Film piece points out Jane Foster’s return more than likely means that Thor is no longer able to weild the Hammer. In the comics Jane picked up the Hammer on the moon. Another possibility is that she might come from the multiverse with tie-ins to the Doctor Strange Multiverse of Madness sequel.
The Director
One thing is for sure, with Ragnarok being pure fun, it will be good to see the return of Waititi In addition to his work on Thor, the director also has a sports film – Next Goal coming out as well as a Star Wars movie in the works. Waititi even told Total Film that during the COVID-19 shutdown he’d been working on refining the script even more before production officially kicks off. He said, “We’re still writing Love And Thunder, and I think it’s good to just keep writing, and then you know, we’ll have a really, really good script,” Waititi said. “And with writing, especially, you should use as much of that time as possible to get your story right, because you never really get it later on. Film is an industry where you’re always complaining about not having enough time. I think, right now, we’ve given ourselves a huge amount of time to work on all sort of things, so we may as well use it.”
