Disney Re-Thinking ‘Black Panther’ Sequel Plans After Boseman’s Death
Over the weekend, we here at MickeyBlog shared that sad news that Chadwick Boseman, an actor best known for his role as Black Panther had passed away from colon cancer. The news shocked Hollywood and the Disney/Marvel communities since Boseman’s four years battle with cancer was kept largely private.
As a recent article in ComicBook.com reminds us, Disney must now review plans for Marvel’s Black Panther 2 sequel which was slated to debut in theaters on May 6, 2022. Marvel head Kevin Feige had no idea that Boseman was ill and only learned that he was fighting cancer hours before Chadwick passed away. According to reports, Boseman never gave up on the belief that he would beat cancer and go on to film Black Panther 2. His goal was to start prepping this month to regain his bulk after his significant weight loss due this illness.
Now Disney must process Boseman’s death on a personal level as a friend and colleague but also what to do about the $1 billion Black Panther franchise. It was long believed that there were plans to have T’Challa cross over into the MCU which means that elements of Marvel’s timeline may need to be reconsidered. Unfortunately there are only two ways of moving forward. Disney can either make the decision to recast T’Challa or hand the mantle of Black Panther to another character. There is buzz within the Marvel community that T’Challa’s sister Shuri may be the new Black Panther.
If Disney opts to go this route there would be backstory to support it. in the comic books, T’Challa was left comatose when he rejects recruitment into “The Cabal” a group of supervillains that includes Doctor Doom, Norman Osborn and Namor.) In this storyline it is actually up to Shuri to take up her brother’s mantle.
Since appearing in the Black Panther Letitia Wright became a fan favorite and as ComicBook.com points out she is a person that most Marvel fans would get behind were she to take over the role as Black Panther.
It is obviously very early days but this is a story that we here at MickeyBlog will be following closely. We promise to let you know as soon as we here more.
