Disney+ Subscribers Will Be Able To Watch Mulan Without Extra Fees Starting In December
Really, really want to watch Mulan on Disney+ but don’t want to shell out the $29.99 to watch the film when it premieres on the streaming network next week? Well, Disney just revealed a date when the live-action remake will be available to watch for FREE with you Disney+ subscription.
According to a recent piece in ScreenRant, the movie will be available to subscribers in December. Since COVID-19 started to spread earlier this year, the film has had a continuously shifting release date. Mulan faced numerous delays due to the coronavirus pandemic. It’s premiere on March 9, 2020 and was then supposed to hit theaters later that month. However, the pandemic required that the date be shifted to July then to August before Disney announced that it would be going to their streaming network instead.
Mulan will be available for purchase on Disney+ starting on September 4, 2020. The film will also release theatrically in markets where cinemas are allowed to operate and where Disney+ isn’t available. The film will cost $29.99 on Disney’s streaming platform. However, there is a silver lining in that , but it would be a permanent purchase, not a rental. That means you can watch it as many times as you like between September and December without having to pay again.
According to ScreenRant, subscribers visiting the pre-order page of the movie are not able to see that the film will open on December 4, 2020. That is a quick turnover meaning that there is only three months between the paid ($29.99) screening and the FREE viewing for paid subscribers.
Since Disney originally made the announcement regarding their straight to Disney+ plans, reception has been mixed. First there are the theaters which have been badly hit by the pandemic. As theater owners struggle to maintain their theaters, they have upset by Disney’s release plans. Fans have also expressed disappointment arguing that during a time where unemployment rates are soaring across the county, the paywall is a huge factor.
Whether people will shell out the $29.99 to watch the film this week remains to be seen. However, one thing remains certain, this does set a precedent and how well the releases does will have implications for the future of cinemas and streaming networks. With only a three month gap between premium access and being able to view the film as part of your subscription in December, it will be interesting to see how many viewers will simply wait it out for 90 days rather than paying to view the film n September.
