Olivia Wilde Could Direct The Next Superhero Franchise in the MCU
We’ve got some big news for the MCU! Sony Pictures is taking a leap into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. According to a new piece in Comicbook.com, Olivia Wilde could be directing a brand new franchise. Though industry insiders are saying that the franchise is as-of-yet untitled, rumor has it that the films will center around Spider-Woman!
Apparently Wilde also penned the script for the project with her writing partner Katie Silberman. The pair worked together on the 2019 indie hit Booksmart. According to reports Amy Pascal has already signed on to produce the upcoming project.
As of going to print, a timeline for the project hasn’t been given. It’s unlikely to start production this year as Wilde, Silberman and Pascal are already working together on another film- a Christmas comedy for Universal which will happen before the Marvel project. In addition Wilde has another film coming out Don’t Worry, Darling starring Florence Pugh, Chris Pine, Shia LaBeouf and Dakota Johnson which will start filming this Autumn.
In these early stages, casting has yet to be announced by insiders have suggested that Alicia Vikander (Tomb Raider) is being considered for the role. This is just one of many projects Sony is considering as a way to tap into the MCU. Other character that may get their own projects includes Silk, Madame Web, Black Cat and Silver Sable. In addition, Morbius starring Jared Leto will be hitting theaters in March and new Venom film is slated for October 2021.
