How The Twitter Community Feels About $29.99 For ‘Mulan’ Rental
If you’ve been following along with MickeyBlog then you know that Disney made the announcement during their quarterly earnings report today that their live-action version of ‘Mulan,” which has been forced to cancel its cinematic release several times due to COVID-19, will be heading straight to streaming this September. Sounds like great news right!? . Well… Disney also announced that in addition to a monthly Disney+ subscription, Disney will be charging streaming customers and additional $29.99 to access the film.
It is this price point ON TOP OF a subscription fee that has Twitter abuzz this evening. Let’s take a minute to see what folks are saying!

Let’s start with Joe above who says not without Mushu!

Why buy the new one when you can eat snacks?
*reads about the #Mulan remake coming to @disneyplus *
Me: Great this makes sense.
*Reads it will be a premium rental for $29.99*

The price seems to be a sticking point for a lot of subscribers.
$30 for #Mulan would be a bargain if you invite over all your friends and family and cram together in a room to watch it. Oh. Wait. https://t.co/rO8GPAYZVs

Lots of people are commenting that it is too high a price point for single people or couples- making it more expensive than a trip to the movies.
Choosing to pay $30 for #Mulan is quite simple when other choices I’m facing are, “Is it safe to send my kids to school?” and, “Will I ever see my friends again?” pic.twitter.com/3FcKzg1mUE

But, another user added some COVID-19 perspective.
Disney – “Lets forfeit Millions so our fans can finally watch #Mulan
Fans – “$29.99?!?! That’s too expensive!”
Reality:
•Movie Ticket $12+
•Food – $10+
•Gas To Theater
•If Liked – Possible Home Purchase
You’re literally saving $10 or so
Disney will lose Millions

And others see a positive in the price point.

@ShaanSridhar above points out that Disney still needs to pay for production costs on the film.
For those who have Qs about #Mulan's $29.99 price point. You're not paying for a one time rental. Rep confirms to me, "Once purchased, Disney+ subscribers will have continuous access to the film for as long as they remain subscribers to the service." https://t.co/8V2JSsZDZC

And Kristen highlights that Disney+ is saying that once purchased, guests will be able to watch Mulan as long as they remain subscribed to Disney+. Access is not removed after a set timeframe like other streaming rentals.
Variety is currently running a poll on their Twitter page and right now it looks the community isn’t quite warming to the idea of paying extra for the film.
The synopsis for the film is as follows:
When the Emperor of China issues a decree that one man per family must serve in the Imperial Army to defend the country from Northern invaders, Hua Mulan, the eldest daughter of an honored warrior, steps in to take the place of her ailing father. Masquerading as a man, Hua Jun, she is tested every step of the way and must harness her inner-strength and embrace her true potential. It is an epic journey that will transform her into an honored warrior and earn her the respect of a grateful nation…and a proud father. “Mulan” features a celebrated international cast that includes: Yifei Liu as Mulan; Donnie Yen as Commander Tung; Jason Scott Lee as Böri Khan; Yoson An as Cheng Honghui; with Gong Li as Xianniang and Jet Li as the Emperor. The film is directed by Niki Caro from a screenplay by Rick Jaffa & Amanda Silver and Elizabeth Martin & Lauren Hynek based on the narrative poem “The Ballad of Mulan.”
‘Mulan’ will be available to purchase on Disney+ starting on September 4th. Readers are encouraged to keep following along with MickeyBlog for the latest Disney movie news and updates!
