“The Jungle Cruise” is 65 Years Old. Here’s How The Upcoming Film Pays Tribute
On July 17th, The Jungle Cruise ride at Disneyland turned 65. The ride has become classic Disney nostalgia and now exists in several Disney parks around the world. This nostalgia was not lost on the cast of the upcoming film “The Jungle Cruise”. Especially, with the anniversary of the July 17th, 1955 grand opening.
Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson stars in and produces the movie. Since the film’s announcement in 2015, he has been very loyal to Walt Disney’s original Jungle Cruise concept. “When the park opened in 1955, Walt Disney had one baby and that baby was Jungle Cruise. He was the very first Jungle Cruise skipper. So we are very honored to bring this movie to life on behalf of Disney and Walt Disney himself.” (etonline.com)
Johnson actually spent time with Disney’s legendary imagineering team to learn more about how the ride was originally conceptualized and built. “I think there was such great anticipation for Jungle Cruise for so long, since it’s part of the fabric of people’s lives. For generations. Years and years,” said Johnson. (etonline.com)
The ride is loosely based on the film “The African Queen” and has remained basically unchanged for 65 years. Guests who rode “The Jungle Cruise” as children, now as adults, can experience the same ride. This nostalgia is perfect Disney. Johnson wanted the film to do the same. The skippers still say “Look! The backside of Water”.
Johnson’s character says this same line in the trailer. True to the experience of the Jungle Cruise ride, Johnson’s character notes, “Of all the jungle cruises you could take in the Amazon, this is undoubtedly the cheapest, but also the most thrilling.”
The release of the film has been pushed back due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
