The Premiere of ‘Hamilton’ On Disney+ Over the Weekend Resulted in a 72% Increase In Disney+ Downloads
If you’ve been following along with MickeyBlog over the weekend then you know one of the biggest bits of news was the premiere of ‘Hamilton’ on Disney’s streaming network Disney+.
The Tony Award-winning musical was certainly the talk of the town over the weekend trending on twitter and generating a lot of buzz across other social media platforms. So did all this spell good news for Disney+? According to a piece in CordCutters this morning the answer is YES!
According to the piece, the Disney+ app was downloaded 513.323 times with 266,084 coming from the US according to Apptopia. This means an increase in downloads of over 72% higher than average for the streaming channel. The numbers also do not include web downloads, Smart TVs or other streaming devices.
In anticipation of the increase of interest due to ‘Hamilton,’ Disney shut down their 7-day Free Trial offer back in June.
Hamilton was initially slated to make its debut in cinemas in October of 2021. However, due to the COVID-19 virus as well as the cultural climate, Disney made the decision to release the film on its streaming network and premiere it just before Independence Day, July 3rd.
The official description on Disney+ says the following about ‘Hamilton’:
An unforgettable cinematic stage performance, the filmed version of the original Broadway production of ‘Hamilton’ combines the best elements of live theater, film, and streaming to bring the cultural phenomenon to homes around the world for a thrilling “once-in-a-lifetime” experience. ‘Hamilton’ is the story of America then told by America now. Featuring a score the blends hip-hop, jazz, R&B, and Broadway, ‘Hamilton’ has taken the story of American founding father Alexander Hamilton and created a revolutionary moment of theater – a musical that has a profound impact on culture, politics and education. Filmed at the Richard Rodgers Theatre on Broadway in June of 2016, the film transports its audience into the world of Broadway Shows in a uniquely intimate way.
Starring Lin-Manuel Miranda, Leslie Odom Jr., Daveed Diggs, Renée Elise Goldsberry, Jonathan Groff, Christopher Jackson, Jasmine Cephas Jones, Okieriete Onaodowan, Anthony Ramos, and Phillipa Soo and directed by Thomas Kail, the film was shot with 6 cameras at the Richard Rodgers Theatre in Manhattan.
