British Schoolgirl Wrote To Disney To Highlight That There Are No Princesses With Glasses Before Creating Her Own
We’ve got an incredibly inspiring story for your Monday afternoon! British schoolgirl Lowri Moore recently made headlines in England when she wrote to Disney to say that she wanted to see more princesses that looked like her! By that, she meant that there is a distinct lack of Disney Princesses wearing glasses.
After her letter didn’t elicit a response from Disney, she decided to take matters into her own hands and created her own book about a spectacle-wearing princess named Rose.
According to a recent piece with the BBC, Lowri’s letter to Disney read, “I’ve grown up watching Disney princesses and I’ve always admired them and thought they were beautiful.” Lowri continues, “Unfortunately none of the princesses wears glasses and that made me feel as though I’m not beautiful enough.”
The book came to life with a little help from local illustrator and Disney Fan Natalie Owen who helped Lowri come up with the perfect character. Rose wears an orange dress and glasses and the title of the book is even Princess Rose and the Golden Glasses.
Lowri said of the project, “The illustrations are amazing and I’m so excited this has happened.” She added, “Rose has blue-ish glasses, brown long hair, kind of like me. Even if it’s not Disney it’s still a role model for young people. I’m happy I got to create one.”
Her mother Cyrilyn Moore adds that Rose’s story is one of self-acceptance. She told the BBC, “[The character] thinks she’s not beautiful because she’s wearing glasses. A bit like someone else I know.” Mom added, “And she goes on a bit of an adventure where she discovers she actually is beautiful.
As of yet, Disney has yet to respond to Lowri’s letter but this is a story we’ll be following closely! We promise to update you if we hear more! In the meantime you can order Lowri’s inspiring book here:
