Star Wars Holiday Special – Will Life Day Come Early?
This is a tough one. I sit on the fence of the issue of the “Star Wars Holiday Special” for one reason: People take Star Wars way too seriously.
And I say this as someone who often compiles three blog posts a day.
But let’s check the tale of the tape:
- Pro: Watching the tongue in cheek Star Wars: The Holiday Special is a necessary dose of reality for the “I hate the Prequels/Sequels” folks.
- Con: “The Holiday Special” is really, really bad. So bad, in fact, it’s been disavowed by The Maker himself, George Lucas.
Someone Else, Please!
I’d prefer to have someone else make a definitive argument. And apparently that someone is Patrick Cavanaugh of ComicBook.com:
- One reason why the special should be released is due to how the fandom feels more divided than ever. Star Wars fans have always passionately debated with one another about all elements of the series, but the release of Star Wars: The Last Jedi resulted in a breaking point for fans…
- Add to those disagreements the toxic nature of social media and audiences grew passionately divided and argumentative, a divide which continued with The Rise of Skywalker, as fans became separated into two opposing camps and leaving no room for nuance in between them.
- By releasing the Holiday Special, fans will be able to come together to embrace what is definitely the most disappointing piece of content the studio has been officially involved in.
The Crux Of The Argument
Now, the above mirrors my own “pro” argument in some ways. But I will also remind my fellow fans that the dregs at either end of the comment spectrum do not a fandom make.
However, the crux of his argument is best laid out via the following passage:
With times being so tough around the world for a number of reasons, Disney and Lucasfilm have a unique window of time to capture a unique opportunity to give fans one of the most bizarre and oddly charming experiences that has ever unfolded within in the franchise and unite fans by allowing us to revel in its absurdity.
Patrick added a bunch of great points in the full piece, which you can find here. It convinced me to lean toward the “Post-it, Disney+!” side.
And we wrote about the topic, previously, too:
But you tell us — in the comments — where you fall on the greatest Star Wars debate of all time.
