‘Black Lives Matter’ to be Painted on NBA Courts at Walt Disney World
In just one month, the NBA will be restarting their season at Walt Disney World. 22 teams have been invited to the “Disney Bubble” and will play eight regular season games as well as the NBA Playoffs and Finals in three arenas at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex. Per ESPN.com, the courts inside each of the three arenas will have “Black Lives Matter” painted on them.
In addition to the COVID-19 pandemic, many NBA players expressed concern over racial inequality and social justice reform issues making them think twice about returning to the courts. This past Friday, leaders of the NBA and NBPA announced they were discussing several ideas to use their platform to call attention to the racial equality movement during their time in Orlando.
Chris Paul, President of the Player’s Union, told ESPN, “the League and Union were collaborating to allow players to wear uniforms with personalized messages linked to social justice on the backs of their jerseys in place of the players’ last names.
NBA teams and staff will begin arriving at Walt Disney World as early as next week to start getting ready for the restart. Players and staff will be staying at one of three Resort Hotels. The NBA isn’t the only professional team to restart their season at Walt Disney World this Summer. Major League Soccer (MLS) will also be kicking of a tournament next month. MLS Players have also stated that they plan to bring more attention to the “Black Lives Matter” movement once they hit the pitch again.
