Lin-Manuel Miranda Discusses How Hamilton Movie Was Filmed In Three Days
If you’re a Broadway fan like I am then no doubt you are counting down the days until the mega-musical ‘Hamilton’ makes its debut on Disney+ (June 3rd.) The brains behind the musical Lin-Manuel Miranda recently appeared on Good Morning American where he discussed the insane success of this production as well as how filming came together for the DIsney+ release.
Check out the full interview here:
If you’ve been following along with the success of ‘Hamilton’ then you know that the theater has been packing in the crowds with tickets nearly impossible to come by. Reflecting on this experience Miranda says, “Our biggest issue has always been accessibility,” he added, “so I’m really glad we had the luxury to basically shoot an independent film in our first year and now the world can see what it felt like to be in that room in June 2016 next Friday.”
A minute-long trailer for the production has been released which you can check out here:
The film version of ‘Hamilton’ was originally set to hit theaters on October 15, 2021, but last month Disney made the announcement that they were moving it to July 3, 2020- just in time for Independence Day at a time where the nation could use it the most.
It should be clear that this is not a movie version of the musical. Rather, its a stage version filmed for the screen at The Richard Rodgers Theater. It features the original Broadway cast including Miranda, Leslie Odom Jr and Daveed Diggs.
Miranda explained how the filming took place over three days from a Sunday to a Tuesday using a combination of live stage performances to make sure that all of the shots were just right. Miranda said, “So it was basically a three-day film shoot with the best-rehearsed cast in the history of the movies,” the Pulitzer Prize winner continued, “because we had all been doing the show for a year at this point.”
