Disneyland Begins Calling Cast Members Back To Work
Last week we here at MickeyBlog shared the exciting news with you that Disneyland will be reopening on July 17th. With that in mind, the Orange County Register is reporting that Disneyland Resort has begun calling back cast members to work!
According to the report, Disneyland has recalled approximately 775 cast members over the past weekend who will begin returning to work on June 28th. This news was passed down from Workers United Local 50 in Anaheim which represents 7,850 food and beverage workers at Disneyland resort.
Workers United Local 50 was “shocked” Disneyland was recalling cast members for essential positions, union president Chris Duarte wrote in a Facebook post. Duarte said in the post (which we’ll show below), “The lack of warning to us and you is unfortunate.” He continued, “If you are a trainer, lead, production scheduler, receiver, chef or area chef start preparing for the company to contact you as early as the weekend.”
Disney cast members were furloughed back in Mid-March at the start of the COVID-19 pandamic.
Disneyland will start the first phase of its reopening on July 9th beginning with Downtown Disney. As of going to print, Disney is proposing opening Disneyland and Disney California Adventure for July 17th. Disney Grand Californian Hotel & Spa and Disney’s Paradise Pier Hotel are both expected to open on July 23rd. As of going to print, Disneyland does not have plans to reopen the Disneyland Hotel as of yet.
When asked about the reopening a Disneyland official said, “The safety and well-being of our cast members and guests are at the forefront of our planning, and we look forward to continued dialogue with our unions on the extensive health and safety protocols, following guidance from public health experts, which we plan to implement as we move toward our proposed, phased reopening.”
However, not everyone is on board with Disney’s reopening plans! A coalition representing 17,000 cast members has written to California Governor Gavin Newsom to try and stop the July reopening saying that Cast Members Health & Safety is of primary concern.
According to the piece in the Orange County Register, The Coalition of Resort Labor Unions wants the government to put pressure on Disneyland to delay reopening the theme parks, hotels and Downtown Disney until it can be done safely.
The Coalition of Resort Labor Unions wants Disney to delay reopening the theme parks, hotels and shopping mall at the Disneyland resort until it can be done safely. Duarte says, “On the recall negotiations we are still not in agreement with Disney,” He added, “On the health and safety portion of the negotiations we are in disagreement with the company on a number of items.”
