David Koepp Will Not Pen Indiana Jones 5
We’ve written about James Mangold recently, and I am pretty sure I gushed about Logan at some point, too. Or maybe I just thought it. IDK.
Anyway, I think Logan was an AMAZING comic book movie; a superhero understanding that while he may be nearly indestructible, he’s not immortal.
One wonders if we’ll be seeing something similar re: Dr. Henry Jones, Jr. – especially since Mangold could write it.
Koepp Off Indy 5
Today, Collider posted about their recent interview with David Koepp, who was originally slated to write Indy 5.
Drew Taylor wrote:
“Not anymore,” Koepp clarified. This largely has to do with Steven Spielberg, who had directed every other entry in the franchise, choosing to walk away. James Mangold, who recently helmed Ford v. Ferrari, has taken over. “When James Mangold came in … he deserves a chance to take his shot at it. I’d done several versions with Steven. And when Steven left, it seemed like the right time to let Jim have his own take on it and have his own person or himself write it.”
Of course, Taylor noted, this is NOT a new motif for the franchise; many different versions of Indiana Jones adventures are out there:
More recently, there were a number of scripts written for the fourth movie and completely abandoned, beginning in the mid-1990s with Indiana Jones and the Monkey King by Chris Columbus, Indiana Jones and the Saucer Men from Mars by Jeb Stuart and Jeffrey Boam, and Indiana Jones and the City of Gods by Frank Darabont. Darabont’s script, for instance, interpolated elements of the Stuart/Boam script and even Koepp’s final script for Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull imports much from Darabont’s thrilling screenplay.
Where Will Indy End Up?
And certainly, Koepp having penned the most panned of Dr. Jones’ movies probably didn’t go unnoticed when Disney picked up Lucasfilm.
But who knows?
IMDB.com has Kathleen Kennedy and Frank Marshall producing, with Steven Spielberg as executive producer. Harrison Ford is, literally, the only actor publically attached to the project, with set to bow in 2022.
Stay tuned, Indy fans. We know that whatever they come up with, X will not mark the spot.
