And a larger version of that bad boy:
Star Wars: Project Maverick
As you recall, this game was originally mentioned as Star Wars: Project Maverick.
And, as you can see, the marketing is going with that allusion to “Top Gun.”
Check out the photo below from 1986’s Top Gun:
A Maverick Motif
In fact, a whole bunch of the best photos of F-14 Tomcats — i.e. Maverick’s fighter plane in Top Gun — follow this same motif.
Interesting note, just like X-wings, F-14’s had variable wing positions:
And they doubled-down (literally) on the imagery in the recent Top Gun: Maverick trailer:
High Hopes for Star Wars: Squadrons
So, here’s what I’m hoping. Given the number of depictions we’ve seen of the careers of both Empire and Rebel Alliance pilots, how about a “career simulator” of basic training, simulators, test flights, and combat.
I played one of these games when I was a kid. It was F-14 by Activision. You enlisted in the Navy and trained to fly:
And yes, my wonderful readers, this is the kind of stuff I geeked-out over when I was 13. My call sign was “Jester” and I played the above, in my parents’ basement, forever.
Never have I found a similar experience (forgive me, I didn’t play X-wing or TIE-fighter), with the training to land on carriers, with intro flights in new aircraft, and then an actual career.
Fun, good stuff. Educational in a way; but immersive in a way I hadn’t experienced, previously.
I wonder if that is what is coming tomorrow?
