‘The One and Only Ivan’ Will Skip Theaters And Premiere on Disney+ Instead
Earlier today we here at MickeyBlog shared the news that Artemis Fowl is now available on Disney+. Disney made the decision at the start of the COVID-19 closure to debut Artemis Fowl on their streaming network rather than in theaters and it looks like it isn’t the only project to get this treatment.
The news is coming out today that “The One and Only Ivan” based on the award-winning children’s book will premiere on Disney+ rather than in theaters as well. It is slated for an August premiere.
The film’s director Thea Sharrock said of the decision, “The world has changed in a heartbeat. People all over the globe have shared important, life-changing experiences in ways we have not seen for a century.” She added, “In response to this, I am so happy that we can share Katherine Applegate’s delightful and original story, ‘The One and Only Ivan’ with the world this August on Disney+, bringing some joy through this unique movie of true friendship, inspired by a true story.”
The film mixes live-action and August and CGI and is based on Applegate’s novel of the same name. It features the voices of Sam Rockwell as the gorilla Ivan, Angelina Jolie as Stella the elephant and Danny DeVito as Bob the dog. Hellen Mirren also stars as Snickers the poodle, Chaka Khan as Henrietta the chicken, Mike White as Frankie the seal, Brooklynn Princes as Ruby the baby elephant, Ron Funches as Murphy the rabbit, Phillipa Soo as Thelma the parrot and also stars Ramon Rodrigues, Ariana Greenblatt and Bryan Cranston.
“The One and Only Ivan” is about a 400 lb silverback gorilla who shares a habitat in a suburban shopping mall with Stella the elephant and Bob the dog. He has few memories of the jungle where he was captured but when Ruby, the baby elephant arrives it touches something deep within him. Ruby was recently separated from her family in the wild which causes him to question his life, where he comes from and where he wants to be.
This is a story that we’ll be following closely over the next few months. Readers are encouraged to keep checking in with us for the latest news and updates.
