‘Hamilton’ Crosses the $1 Billion Mark on Broadway
Congratulations Hamilton!. According to a piece this morning in Forbes the hit musical by Lin-Manuel Miranda has joined the select ranks of Broadway musicals that have surpassed the $1 billion mark!
This comes as fantastic news for the Tony Award-winning show.And for those that couldn’t pay the steep ticket prices to see it on Broadway, Disney announced last month that the musical would be coming to the Disney+ streaming network on July 3rd!
As Forbes tell us, the deal with Disney is worth an estimated $30 million for Miranda alone making him one of the highest paid celebrities in Hollywood and pushing the musical to earn a mighty $1 billion in global revenue.
So how did Hamilton reach that seemingly unobtainable milestone? Forbes provided a breakdown:
- Broadway $649.9 Million
- U.S. Touring $167.2 Million
- West End/London $38.6 Million
- Publishing $34.3 million
- Albums $46.9 million
- Other Merchandise $7.5 million
- The Hamilton Movie $75 million
The news also couldn’t have come at a better time as we take the temperature of a country still reeling from the death of George Floyd, Afterall, Hamilton provides what Forbes calls “an optimistic portrayal of an America-for-all in which black and brown actors portray the Founding Fathers.”
“It’s great that we have some art in this moment that generally unites people, to have something in common,” says historian Renee Romano of Oberlin College, who co-edited a book of essays about Hamilton. “We’re so polarized in so many ways. It’s really nice to have something that’s like your safe topic of conversation at Thanksgiving dinner.”

Miranda, adapted the musical from the best-selling 2004 Ron Chernow biography. He also wrote the libretto and score and even played the title role on stage.
