Director of Disney’s ‘Atlantis: The Lost Empire’ Reveals Details of Sequel
Kirk Wise, director of Disney’s stunning animated feature Atlantis: The Lost Empire has just revealed a few new details regarding a planned sequelm in a recent interview with Collider.
Now it should be noted that prior to the COVID-19 shutdown Disney had BIG plans to do live-action remakes of a TON of films including everything from Pinocchio to Hercules. It was even rumored that Atlantis would be given the live-action treatment. How many of these projects get the green light after the lengthy studio closure remains to be seen. However, should Disney decided to switch gears, Wise hinted in his interview that he has a sequel to the Atlantis fully mapped out.
When asked if he’d written a sequel Wise responded, “Believe it or not we did.” He added, “[Story supervisor] John Sanford, Gary and I actually concocted an idea for a sequel to Atlantis. It had no relation to the Atlantis TV series that was being developed at Disney Television Animation. This was a feature-length, full-on, full-blown sequel to Atlantis.”
Wise went on to talk a bit more about the sequel saying, “We were going to have a new villain in the story. The villain was going to be wearing big, scary, wool, bulky, World War I-style clothing with a frightening gasmask to obscure its face; a little Darth Vader-esque.” He continued. “And this villain was going to try and retake Atlantis and finish the job that Rourke was unable to accomplish. And the big twist in the climax of the movie is that the villain is unmasked and it turns out to be Helga Sinclair. Plot twist!”
Atlantis was one of Disney’s traditionally animated films from the 90s that never really caught on at the box office. It only made $186 million at the box office after it cost around $120 million to make. It also received mixed reviews from critics who felt that Disney’s attempts at appealing to a more mature audience had fallen flat. That being said, the film has withstood the test of time and has developed a bit of a cult following among fans who have been cheering on a sequel or remake of the film.
The original film tells the story of a crew of archaeologists led by Milo Thatch who board and incredible submarine and head deep into the mysteries of the seas in search of the lost kingdom of Atlantis. The underwater expedition takes an unexpected turn when the team’s mission must shift from exploring this underwater city to protecting it from mystical powers.
