NBA Board of Governors Expected to Vote Thursday on Return-to-Play at Disney Plan
The NBA Board of Governors is expected to vote on Thursday on the return-to-play plan to finish the NBA season. The plan includes resuming the NBA season at Disney’s ESPN Wide World of Sports complex in Orlando. The NBA season was suspended in March due to COVID-19.
Early in April, NBA fans started to hear rumors of a possible reboot of the season at Disney. After, months of discussing the details, the vote is expected to pass “overwhelmingly” on Thursday. ESPN’s Adam Wojnarowski says, the league is “still digging down on details of what that would look like, and they’re going to spend this week finalizing the structure and format of a return to play.”
The plan would include 22 teams playing a regular season beginning in July with playoff berths in both Eastern and Western conferences. The teams would stay in hotels on Disney property or in Orlando and practice at the complex with safety measures in place.
Team owner Mark Cuban says this about NBA commissioner Adam Silver according to ESPN (May), “He’ll talk to all the different owners and get their perspective, bounce ideas off them, get their feedback and find out their logic. Then we’ll all get together, discuss it and make the decision.”
There seems to be a growing support for the Disney plan. The union seems to be onboard at least leaders do not seem to believe there will be a labor issue.
All of these are positive signs the vote will go through on Thursday and NBA will resume soon. The ESPN complex at Disney can easily handle the teams, games and practices so physical space is not an issue. NBA, and sports fans in general, will wait for Thursday’s vote to see if the game can begin. Stay tuned to MickeyBlog for all the details.
