“You’re Welcome” Inspired by The Rock’s Wrestling Career
The movie Moana is as loved for its music as it is for the story of Moana and her adventure to return the heart of te fiti. Many believe the music is what propelled the film after it left the box office. The genius behind the music is Lin-Manuel Miranda (Hamilton) and he says he was inspired by wrestling? More specifically Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson’s wresting.
The lovable Maui is voiced by Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson. WWE wrestler, actor and all around fun personality. Johnson’s larger than life personality was perfect for one of the movie’s most well-known songs “You’re Welcome” which Johnson is not afraid to sing anywhere and all the time (especially to his young daughter).
But, Miranda knew The Rock would be perfect.
My guy finally had one day off from a little known show called HAMILTON, and flew down from NY to Florida to be my maestro and human metronome. We pushed all our chips in on this one. So fun 🥃🎶#commit https://t.co/q34Fbg45Nk

To prepare, Miranda watched YouTube videos of “The Rock” wrestling for the WWE. He had tons of videos and could get a good handle on Johnson’s or The Rock’s vocal range and capabilities and the song was written specifically for him.
“[Johnson is] the only person who could pull off THIS chorus and still have you love him,” Miranda tweeted. Truly, “You’re Welcome” features the same bravado and lack of humility as Johnson’s wrestling persona. Perhaps that’s why the song and its performer feel like such a natural fit.” (Miranda)
Never was a song easier to write than You're Welcome. I watched Youtube compilations of @TheRock singing during his time at WWE to get a sense of his vocal range. He's the only person who could pull off THIS chorus and still have you love him. #TheWonderfulWorldOfDisney

The film was recently used for the premiere of The Wonderful World of Disney. It’s choice made sense as we move into the summer and crave those tropical vacations that may be out of reach right now. Also, it is a culturally relevant movie depicting Moana as the keeper of her culture. She is tasked with saving it and reviving it at the same time with her adventure beyond the waves. The music is important, but only part of what makes this film one of Disney’s recent triumphs.
