Goofy Isn’t Actually A Dog?
It is indisputable that Mickey is a mouse, Donald is a duck and that Pluto is a dog. However, Goofy has remained the subject of debate in Disney circles. Many hold firm that he too is a dog, however, there’s also been rumors circulating for years that he’s a cow!?
To solve this mystery Yahoo Entertainment went straight to the source this week and asked Bill Farmer who has been voicing the role of Goofy since the 80s. And what he has to say might surprise you.
The confusion seems to lie around the major differences between Goofy and Pluto. Mickey’s dog Pluto, for instance, is a pretty obvious dog.
He walks on all fours, doesn’t wear clothes and doesn’t speak. But to quote a recent post in UNILAD, how could Goofy, an anthropomorphic character who walks on two legs like a human be the same species!?
As we mentioned above, confusion about what species Goofy was really started to surface after shows like Mickey Mouse Works and House of Mouse had a storyline about a flirtation between Goofy and Clarabelle Cow. However, when looking at the origins of Goofy which go all the way back to 1932, he originally surfaced as the character “Dippy Dawg.”
The character has been voiced by Farmer since 1987. In a recent interview with Yahoo Farmer had this to say about Goofy.
“He is not a dog. Pluto is a dog, but Goofy seems to be in the canine family in the same way that a wolf is not a dog, but they also are in the canine family.”
In the interview Farmer also said that Goofy was his favorite character growing up, “I grew up doing voices, and I loved cartoons. I always practised the voices and became a stand-up comic impressionist for about five years before moving to LA.”
So that should put the mystery surrounding Goofy to rest a bit! Don’t miss Farmer on a brand new show he’s hosting for Disney+ called “It’s a Dog’s Life.”
Here’s the official description for the show NOW on Disney+
