Frozen May Be Closing But Disney Has Other Broadway Musicals In The Pipeline
Earlier this week, Disney shared the sad news that Frozen The Broadway musical would be closing permanently. This made it the first major production that became a casualty of the lengthy closure of all theaters in New York City which may not see productions and running until Labor Day at the earliest.
However, Disney still has big plans for Broadway as an article in Comicbook.com tells us. Disney Theatrical Productions still has three upcoming projects in the pipeline. This includes The Princess Bride, Jungle Book and Bedknobs and Broomsticks. Thomas Schumacher, head of Disney Theatrical Productions said, “we remain committed to developing and producing stage musicals for a long time to come.”
The Jungle Book already has a directly lined up in Christopher Gattelli. According to Disney, the musical will feature new songs by Richard Sherman. For The Princess Bride, Bob Martin will be working on the book with Rick Elice, David Yazbek on lyrics. And third up is Bedknibs and Broomsticks which will be directed by Candice Edmunds and Jamie Harrison. The book will be handled by Brian Hill and Neil Bertram will be working on the songs.
All of this is positive news and much needed after the sombre news earlier this week regarding Frozen which shook the Broadway community. Regarding the closure, Schumacher wrote, “This difficult decision was made for several reasons but primarily because we believe that three Disney productions will be one too many titles to run successfully in Broadway’s new landscape.” As of going to print Disney it would appear remains committed to reopening Aladdin and The Lion King when Broadway does re-open.
As we reported this week, Disney still has plans to continue with national and international tours of Frozen The Broadway Musical and costumes, set pieces, props and more will be repurposed and distributed to these smaller-scale productions.
