Major League Soccer Reportedly Coming to Walt Disney World
Per several online sources, Major League Soccer is expected to return to the pitch as early at June 1 as restrictions begin to loosen around the COVID-19 pandemic. These same reports indicate the league will be coming to Walt Disney World to resume their season.
Insiders are saying that all 26 teams will come to Walt Disney World beginning June 1 to begin training at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex. Training would last around three to four weeks followed by a tournament between all the teams. Both the practices and tournament would have no spectators.
Per ESPN, the tournamnet would consist of the 26 teams divided into groups with each team playing about five games in the group stage. Following the group stage would be the knockout stage. Consolation games would also be offered to ensure each Major League Soccer team played the same number of games.
The main thing that would have to take place to get Major League Soccer restarted at Walt Disney World would be COVID-19 testing. In addition to players and coaches being tested, support staff and even Cast Members working at the resorts and ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex would need to be tested.
While nothing is official at this time, ESPN said that in order for this proposal to move forward and Major League Soccer to begin restart their season at Walt Disney World, the MLS Players Association would need to approve the deal. Currently the Players Association is in ongoing discussions with the League over salary cuts.
Major League Soccer isn’t the only professional sports league rumored to resume their season at Walt Disney World. As we have been reporting over the past several weeks, the NBA has also been in talks to play at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex. In addition, Florida Governor, Ron DeSantis announced yesterday, that professional sports are welcome to return to action in the state of Florida. It will definitely be interesting to see how is all “plays” out!
