New Release Date Announced For Marvel’s New Mutants
Today, Disney announced that August 28th will officially be the NEW release date for The New Mutants a X-Men spin-off directed by Josh Boone. Those many films have been shifted around in the wake of COVID-19, this film is in the unique (though unfortunate) position of have been moved five times over the past two years.
The film is a 20th Century Fox release which Disney acquired during its acquisition of the company last year. It stars Maisie Williams and Anya-Taylor Joy. As Vanity Fair tells us, the film wrapped up filming in September of 2017 and was supposed to be released in April 2018. However, it wasn’t meant to be. Afraid to go up against Deadpool 2, the studio moved the film to February 22nd.
However, as part of the massive Fox reshuffle that took place last year, The New Mutants was again shifted to August 2, 2019. Then, Disney but Fox and as a result, the film was moved to April 3,2020. And unfortunately, that’s when COVID-19 saw the shuttering of theaters worldwide.
It will certainly be interesting to see the end product. There have been lots of rumors circulating around production issues from the film (which is supposed to be a superhero/horror film hybrid) not being scary enough to reshoots needing to but not being able to happen because the cast has aged so much over the past 4 years.
That the film is slated to be released in theaters in August puts an end to speculation that the project was destined to head straight to Disney+ in a way similar to Disney’s own Artemis Fowl. The decision to hold off until theaters re-open puts The New Mutants in the unique position of being one of just a few studio releases still in the pipeline before Labor Day. Others include Tenent (July 17), Mulan (July 24), Wonder Woman 1984 (August 14), and A Quiet Place Part II (September 4.)
While we wait to see if this new release date has staying power, you can check out the official trailer here:
