Shanghai Disneyland Opens at 30% Capacity After 3 Month Closure
When Shanghai Disney opened its gate at 9:30am on Monday morning, the first group of 200 lucky visitors were allowed into the park. Guests are being let us as staggered groups, so to keep the social distancing guidelines intact.
CNBC’s Eunice Yoon reports the latest regarding Shanghai Disneyland’s reopening in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic.
It seems Chinese consumers aren’t afraid to return to theme parks. Tickets for Monday’s reopening of Shanghai Disney sold out within minutes. Guests are required to purchase their admission tickets before arriving at the park, and annual pass holders will need to make reservations.
Shanghai Disney, which has been closed since Jan. 25, will be the first major theme park to reopen its gates since the Covid-19 shutdowns. Usually, that park sees around 80,000 visitors per day, has been forced to operate at 30% capacity, or about 24,000 visitors.
CEO Bob Chapek said during an earnings call Tuesday that the park would initially operate well below that capacity and then ramp up to reach that 30% cap over the course of several weeks. Disney will implement the government-issued Shanghai Health QR code, a contact tracing and early detection system that is used widely in China, and require all guests must wear masks throughout the park except while dining.
“Since the reopening of Disneytown, Wishing Star Park and Shanghai Disneyland Hotel in early March, we have been deeply moved by the encouragement from our guests and Disney fans,” said Joe Schott, president and general manager of the Shanghai Disney Resort. “Today, we are extremely pleased to reopen Shanghai Disneyland thanks to the unwavering efforts of our castmembers and our community.” Joe Schott, president and general manager of Shanghai Disney Resort.
He added: “Today’s celebrations will be remembered with joy, as we look forward to welcoming our guests back to this happy place.”
Disney’s theme parks in Hong Kong, Japan, Europe and the U.S. remain closed in response to the coronavirus pandemic, with no date yet set for reopening.
