Check Out How Disney Parks Around The World Celebrate Earth Month All Year Round!
We have officially reached the last day of Earth Month, as April comes to a close, it’s time to reflect on the ways that Disney celebrated the magic of nature this month, the work we can continue to do to protect the planet and Disney’s ongoing commitment to sustainability and the environment.
With that in mind, here’s a brief look at what the Disney parks around the world did to celebrate earth month as well as efforts that will continue well into the future!
Walt Disney World
The Orlando theme parks shared some exciting updates from the Animal Kingdom. Though the theme parks are closed, there were still some exciting happenings include the arrival of a porcupette named Shelley and Asha the Hartmann’s zebra foal. Dr Zak Gezon also provided us with an incredible DIY project- making a pollinator garden from home. You can find the instructions here!
Disney World takes continuous steps all year round to reduct their environmental footprint. Examples include two solar arrays that provide enough clean energy to power two of Walt Disney World’s theme parks! Horticulturalists also utilize the latest growing techniques to help feed the planet. One such example is that both Garden Grill and Sunshine Seasons restaurants in EPCOT’s Land Pavilion use fresh produce and seafood grown in the adjacent greenhouses!
Disneyland Resort
Let’s move over to the West Coast where teams at Disneyland Resort promote practices all year round to reduce the park’s impact on the environment. One example is that all of the Disneyland Resort steam trains and the Mark Twain Riverboat use biodiesel. This fuel is produced from the used cooking oil from Disneyland’s kitchens! Using this method means that 200,000 gallons of petroleum diesel are eliminated each year! Energy-efficient LED lighting is also used throughout the parks. This includes the iconic Sleeping Beauty Castle which shines brightly year-round thanks to LED technology.
Disneyland Paris
Moving across the pond, Disneyland Paris has been busy during quarantine sharing awesome ways to protect the magic of nature. From the incredible efforts of their horticulture team to special broadcasts of nature-inspired shows, it has bee wonderful watching them do their part for earth month!
Did you know that Disneyland Paris also has an innovative geothermal facility located at Villages Nature Paris? This facility uses naturally occurring heat and steam that comes from underground to power theme park and resort areas! Disneyland Paris also has the distinction of being the ONLY European theme park to have its own recycling and wastewater plant!
Shanghai Disney Resort
At eco-friendly Wishing Star Park, the 106th species of bird in the world was recently sighted. The park is also home to a variety of other native Chinese species and conservation work is carried out here in conjunction with the Disney Conservation Fund. Wishing Star Lake is also a powerful treatment plant that recycles and purifies its water. The lake water is also used to irrigate resort vegetation.
Hong Kong Disneyland Resort
Hong Kong Disneyland uses on-site wood chippers to handle yard waste including clippings from bushes and shrubs. This turns plant materials into organic mulch. In 2019 alone, this allowed the resort to reduce 830 tons of waste! Hong Kong Disneyland also boasts an inventive food waste program and last year set 770 tons of food scraps to a government-owned anaerobic facility which converts the waste into energy!
Tokyo Disney Resort
One-sixth of the total theme park area at Tokyo Disney Resort is set aside for greenery. The Resort also uses LEDs to illuminate “it’s a small world,” Cinderella Castle, Mount Prometheus and evening parade floats. The resort also has a waste sorting process where cast members are committed to recycling as much theme park waste as possible.
Disney Cruise Line
Disney Cruise line is dedicated to minimizing the impact on the environment through initiatives like increasing fuel efficiency, minimizing waste and promoting conservation around the world. The cruise line has reduced the amount of single-use plastics by eliminating items like plastic straws, travel-size bathroom amenities, cutlery stirrers, shopping bags and more. Through environmental programs, the cruise line has also eliminated more than 6,400 tons of metal, glass, plastic and paper through recycling efforts as well as 31,000 pounds of debris from beaches and waterways.
Mickey & Co. Clothing
Last week, we here at MickeyBlog also reported that shopDisney has re-introduced a brand from 1984. Mickey & Co features sustainable apparel made from up to 50% of fiber that is made from recycled plastic bottles some of which were actually collected at Walt Disney World Resort.
This is just some of the ways that Disney theme parks around the globe demonstrate an ongoing commitment to the planet not just in April but all year round! Readers are encouraged to keep following along with MickeyBlog for the latest Walt Disney World news and updates.
