AMC Theaters Move Toward Reopening To Screen Mulan and Other Films Put On Hold
Though we’ve spent a lot of time here at MickeyBlog sharing reports that speculate on when the theme parks might open, tonight we switch gears a bit to talk about the cinemas. A recent post on SlashFilm suggests that AMC theaters (which have locations at both Disney Springs and Downtown Disney) are strategizing on ways to re-open by Mid-Summer.
If you’ve been following along with national news then you know that Georgia and a few additional states are making headlines by re-opening some businesses. AMC is now weighing the possibility of re-opening at some point in the near future. However, as the piece in SlashFilm suggests, this may be largely dependent on when the studios actually release movies to screen.
The earliest we mid see movie theaters open is July when there are big movies to screen including Mulan which was mere days away from opening when the COVID-19 crisis started. Hollywood has delayed every new release until June at the earliest. Judd Apatow’s The King of Staten Island is still slated to open in June. AMC also has its sights set on Christopher Nolan’s Tenent and Mulan which are both still set for July as well. This is the goal post that the theater chain is working toward.
According to a piece in The Hollywood Reporter, AMC is going to wait until at least July as per a statement that reads,
“As we plan our reopening, the health and safety of our guests and associates is our absolute highest priority. To be able to open, we also need a line of sight into a regular schedule of new theatrical blockbusters that get people truly excited about returning to their favorite movie theaters. Those blockbusters are scheduled to return this summer, beginning with Warner Brothers’ Tenet and Disney’s Mulan, with many more major titles scheduled immediately thereafter.
While we expect to open our theaters in the weeks ahead of these new blockbusters, utilizing creative programming of immensely popular previously released films, we would be wise to do so only directly in advance of the release of major new movie titles. AMC is currently working through every detail required to successfully showcase these exciting new releases in an environment that’s safe and welcoming for moviegoers, and we will share those details as we get closer to the dates when our theaters will reopen.”
AMC will join other chains like Cinemark who recently released a statement that they are working toward a mid-Summer opening date but noted that this is largely contingent on health and safety regulations as well as studio content. Regal theaters have not released any information as of yet on when they plan to re-open.
This is a story that we’ll be watching closely here at MickeyBlog and we promise to keep you posted as soon as we know more!
