Disney Is Moving Ahead With Atlantis: The Lost Empire Remake
Previously here at MickeyBlog, we shared rumors that Disney was considering a remake of Atlantis: The Lost Empire and now it looks like the project is actually gaining traction. According to a report in We Got This Covered Disney is moving forward with the project.
Atlantis was one of Disney’s traditionally animated films from the 90s that never really caught on at the box office. It only made $186 million at the box office after it cost around $120 million to make. It also received mixed reviews from critics who felt that Disney’s attempts at appealing to a more mature audience had fallen flat.
So is this a wise remake to take on? According to reports, Disney thinks so. WeGotThisCovered says it’s down to the fact that the film has become a bit of a cult classic. Fans now see it as one of Disney’s most underrated films. This is the reason that Disney is considering it as a prime candidate for its ever-expanding list of live-action films which also includes remakes of Robin Hood, Cinderella, Pinocchio and more!
Atlantis released in 2001 tells the story of a crew of archaeologists led by Milo Thatch who board and incredible submarine and head deep into the mysteries of the seas in search of the lost kingdom of Atlantis. The underwater expedition takes an unexpected turn when the team’s mission must shift from exploring this underwater city to protecting it from mystical powers.
So who would take on the role of leading man Milo Thatch? Disney has apparently set its sights on Spidey himself Tom Holland. Holland is no stranger to Disney. In addition to his work a Spider-Man in the Marvel films (of which a third is currently in development) he also voiced the lead character in Pixar’s latest film Onward which you can now check out on Disney+
It’s important to know that all of the info is unofficial and there is no word as to whether Disney has begun casting or if Holland has shown an interest in the role.
