Billy Porter Talks Playing Fairy Godmother and Joining Up With Some Marvel Heroes In ‘Little Shop of Horrors’
As we previously reported here at MickeyBlog, Billy Porter has signed on to take on the coveted role of Fairy Godmother for Disney’s live-action update of Cinderella which is slated to hit theaters at some point in 2021. In a recent interview with Variety, porter described this iconic role as “genderless” and “non-conforming”
Porter added, “We have all these sort of genders that we’ve put on things and it doesn’t actually matter. It’s not about sex. It’s not about sexuality. It’s not about gender. It’s about magic. It’s about being somebody’s fairy godmother, father, person, whatever you want to call it. That’s what it’s about.”
Best known for his role in Pose, Porter told Variety that he recently completed his work on the movie before Disney needed to shut-down construction due to the COVID-19 outbreak. He wouldn’t talk much about the role but did reveal a bit about his costume. According to Porter, “It’s gold and there are pants, there are skirts, there are heels, there are cowl necks and wands and things,” he said.
In addition to his role as Fairy Godmother, Porter is also rumored to be teaming up with a couple of Marvel’s finest for a big-screen remake of Little Shop of Horrors. As we previously reported here at MickeyBlog both Chris Evans (Captain America) and Black Widow (Scarlett Johannson) are expected to be in the film. Porter will reportedly voice the role of Audrey II- the talking main eating plant in the film.
Though Porter wouldn’t confirm casting, he did say that they would both be a good fit for the roles. He said of the possibility of Johannson in the role of Audrey, “She’s a fantastic actress and her energy is right.” He added, “You need that kind of strong but vulnerable. It’s the dichotomy of that.”

As for Evans as Audrey’s abusive dentist boyfriend, he said, “He’ll be hot, which is sort of what it needs to be. You need to understand why she stays in that abusive relationship.”
Porter is currently riding out the quarantine at home with his husband Adam Smith in Long Island. During this time he’s been work on his memoir, children’s book and numerous scripts.
