Could a Live’Action ‘Mulan’ Sequel Be On The Way?
Earlier this month, we here at MickeyBlog shared the news with you that Disney’s live-action version of Mulan was having its opening date shifted to July 27th due to the COVID-19 outbreak which has seen theaters shuttered around the world and has put a damper on Spring box office returns.
However, according to a recent piece in Comic Book Resources (CBR) Disney may have already set its sights on a sequel despite the fact that it hasn’t hit theaters yet.
According to recent reports, a sequel is in the early stages of development with producers Chris Bender, Jason Reed and Jake Weiner all slated to return. However, it should be noted that this is still in the rumor stage and no details have been given regarding writer, director or cast.
It should be noted that Disney did release a direct-to-video sequel for the original animated version of Mulan. Mulan II follows General Li Shang and Mulan as they escort the Emperor’s three daughters across the country to meet their fiancees. However, I would suspect that with the live-action film adhering more to the traditional legend of Mulan that the sequel to this modern version will be something entirely different.
Directed by Niki Caro, Disney’s Mulan stars Yifei Liu as Mulan, Donnie Yen as Commander Tung, Jason Scott Lee as Böri Khan, and Yoson An as Cheng Honghui, with Gong Li as Xianniang and Jet Li as the Emperor. The film arrives in theaters July 24.

Mulan isn’t the only live-action project to get a sequel. As we’ve previously reported here at MickeyBlog, Disney is also considering a sequel to the live-action version of Aladdin which was a runaway hit last Summer as well as a Jungle Book 2.
