Family of Teen Who Visited Disney World Suing Local Sheriff’s Department
The family of a high school student is suing their local sheriff’s department. According to a story from the Orlando Sentinel, a patrol sergeant from the Marquette County Sheriff’s Department came to the home of Amyiah Cohoon to tell her to remove posts that she made on social media. The posts claimed that Cohoon was recovering from the Coronavirus.
Cohoon fell ill with a respiratory infection after a class trip to Walt Disney World over Spring Break. The teen went to the hospital with symptoms consistent with Coronavirus. Her test results were negative, though physicians stated that she was likely outside of the timeframe to test positive.
Cohoon posted to Instagram during this time, reporting what was going on. “i wont be back for a while longer due to me … having the COVID-19 virus….I dont want the attention it’s just the truth.” An additional post stated “Winning the fight with Covid-19” and featured an image of Cohoon hospitalized.
School officials contacted the Sheriff’s Department about the posts, which reportedly caused panic and distress among other students. A patrol sergeant came to Cohoon’s home and threatened her with jail if she did not delete the posts.
Suing Local Sheriff’s Department
The action taken by the patrol sergeant was clearly enough to rattle this family. The family is suing the local Sheriff’s Department, for threatening their daughter. According to the Orlando Sentinel report, school officials notified families in the district that Cohoon’s claims to having the Coronavirus were a “foolish means to get attention.” What are your thoughts? Is Cohoon’s family correct for pursuing this action against the Sheriff’s Department? Stay tuned for any developments in this story!
