Sam Raimi Confirmed As Director For ‘Doctor Strange In the Multiverse of Madness’
It looks like the upcoming Doctor Strange sequel, Doctor Strange In the Multiverse of Madness officially has a director. Sam Raimi announced this week that he was stepping in the director’s seat for the project. Many Marvel fans will know Raimi as the director behind the original Spider-Man trilogy.
Raimi’s way of revealing that he had taken the job was as cryptic as something out of a Marvel comic. During a recent interview with Coming Soon, Raimi reflected that in the 2004 Spider-Man 2 movie there was an inside joke about “Doctor Strange” in one of the scenes taking place at the Daily Bugle. Raimi reflected on the scene and said, “When we had that moment in Spider-Man 2, I had no idea that we would ever be making a Doctor Strange movie, ”
He went on to say, “It was really funny to me that coincidentally that line was in the movie,” he added. “I wish we had the foresight to know that I was going to be involved in the project.”
Initially, Doctor Strange director Scott Derrickson was expected to reprise his role as director. However, the news came earlier this year that he had split with the studio over “creative differences.” However, he did report his support for Raimi taking over the helm of the project. Check out this tweet he sent out after the announcement:
I’ve worked with Sam Raimi. One of the nicest people I’ve known in the film business, and as a director, a true living legend. What a great choice to take over Doctor Strange.

The little has been revealed regarding the plot of Multiverse of Madness, last year Derrickson referred to it as the first scary Marvel film. Whether or not Raimi’s take on the film remains true to that original vision remains to be seen. We also know that the film is expected to tie in with various Disney+ Marvel projects including Loki and WandaVision.
Benedict Cumberbatch will be back in the title role. We are also told (as per the tie-in outlined above) that potentially both Elizabeth Olson (Scarlet Witch) and Paul Bettany (Vision) could play a role in the film. Benedict Wong will also be back as Wong.
Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is set to hit theaters Nov. 5, 2021. Readers are encouraged to keep following along with MickeyBlog for the latest Marvel news and updates!
