‘Artemis Fowl’ Given June 12th Opening Date on Disney+

If you watched the Disney Family Singalong last night on ABC, you may have noticed a very special announcement. ‘Artemis Fowl’ the film based on the much-loved book will be premiering on Disney Plus on June 12th.

The film was originally slated to be released in cinemas nationwide on May 29th but was a casualty of the COVID-19 shutdown with theaters around the world currently closed. Though other titles like Mulan and Black Widow had there theatrical release dates shifted until later this month, Disney announced earlier this spring that “Artemis Fowl” would be heading to the company’s streaming network – Disney+

“Artemis Fowl” is based on the book by Eoin Colfer. It follows 12-year old genius Artemis Fowl as he tries to find his father who has disappeared. With the help of his loyal protector Butler, Artemis sets out to find him- uncovering an ancient underground civilization in the process that is filled with fairies. Believing that his father’s disappearance is connected with the fairy realm he plots to get to the bottom of his father’s disappearance going toe to toe with these all-powerful sprites!

The title character in the film is played by newcomer Ferdia Shaw with Colin Farrell as his father. Other cast members include Lara McDonnell as Captain Holly Short (an elf who is kidnapped by Artemis), Dame Judi Dench as Commander Root and Josh Diggums- a dwarf with a penchant for stealing.

The film is directed by Kenneth Branagh and was adapted for the screen by award-winning playwright Conor McPherson.
