California Governor Says Mass Gatherings Unlikely Throughout Summer 2020
California Governor Gavin Newsom held a press conference yesterday (April 14, 2020) that casts doubt on whether we will see Disneyland re-open this Summer.
According to a summary of the speech that appeared in Variety, Newsom said that mass gatherings are unlikely to be allowed for many months. This was part of a larger conversation about the slow re-opening of California’s state economy.

During the press conference, Newsom was asked how he envisions things panning out over the summer including traditional peak periods for travel and tourism like Fourth of July and Memorial Day. He said, “The prospect of mass gatherings is negligible at best until we get to herd immunity and we get to a vaccine,” Newsom said. “So large-scale events that bring in hundreds, thousands, tens of thousands of strangers, all together across every conceivable difference, health and otherwise, is not in the cards based upon our current guidelines and current expectations.”
He also acknowledged that its currently impossible to predict any sort of timeline but added, “When you suggest June, July, August, it is unlikely.” He then outlined essential first steps that would need to happen before things returned to semi-normal. This includes an increase in testing and contact tracing.
As part of this, he acknowledged that social-distancing guidelines would likely remain in place but that we may see restaurants etc open on a more restricted basis. This also applies to schools which might have to stagger schedules or cut class sizes.
This obviously puts a damper on plans for those considering a Summer visit to the “Happiest Place on Earth.” However, it should be noted that as of going to print, Disneyland has yet to update its closure policy. The website says that the theme parks will remain closed indefinitely with no future packages available to book until at least June 1st.
