Christoph Waltz Says Alita: Battle Angel Sequel Being Held Up By Disney
Confession: One of my favorite under-the-radar films of all time is Alita: Battle Angel and I’m not alone! Fans of the film have been clamouring for news on when we might see a sequel to the 2019 film. However, according to Christoph Waltz, one of the leads in the film, whether or not a sequel sees the light of day is largely Disney’s decision.
The film came out last February, a month before Fox was acquired by Disney. That means the house of mouse has gained control over this sci-fi franchise as well as others including Alien, Predator, Planet of the Apes and of course Avatar.
What makes the film so special, and what makes us hope that we see a sequel is the fact that it is a live-action adaptation of manga/anima developed by James Cameron and directed by Robert Rodriguez.
The film stars Rosa Salazar as Alita and Christoph Waltz as Dr. Dyson Ido. Though it was not what a blockbuster, it did earn $405 million at the box off according to a recent piece in ScreenRant which isn’t bad for a film with a $170 million budget. However, though the film performed well, the fact that it underperformed when pitted against some of Disney’s mega-blockbusters means that it may not feel lucrative to the studio.
During a recent interview with Collider, Waltz was asked if he would be interested in a sequel to the film, Waltz said, “Of course! I know that people liked it and aside from what others said, I loved it and I liked working on it and I liked the result.” He said he hasn’t heard anything about a sequel before speculating that it may be because of Disney, “Maybe it doesn’t fit into the Disneyfication, but I have no clue. I have no clue.”
And according to the piece in ScreenRant, he may not be that far off base. Following Disney’s acquisition of Fox, several Fox projects that were in the pipeline got the axe. Including Mouse Guard, News of the World (starring Tom Hanks) and Foster.
However, fans continue to rally around Alita. Back in February fans got #AlitaSequel trending on Twitter to encourage Disney to take notice of and greenlight the project. As ScreenRant tells us, some fans even went so far as to have an Alita: Battle Angel 2 banner flown over the 2020 Oscars ceremony. The film also had good reviews with audiences and critics alike who liked the stunning visuals and the collaboration between Rodriquez and Cameron. The film even-teased a sequel.
But, whether Alita 2 sees the light of day remains to be seen! This is a story we’ll be following closely and readers are encouraged to keep checking in with MickeyBlog for the latest news and updates. You can also check out the trailer for the original Alita: Battle Angel now available to screen!
