Onward opened in theaters just two weeks (March 6th) before the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic was starting to be felt. With the closure of theaters across the county, Disney opted to release the film for digital download early March 20th.
At that time it was announced that the film would also be released on Disney+ starting on April 3rd!
“While we’re looking forward to audiences enjoying our films on the big screen again soon, given the current circumstances, we are pleased to release this fun, adventurous film to digital platforms early for audiences to enjoy from the comfort of their homes,” said Dan Scanlon (Director, Onward) and Kori Rae (Producer, Onward).
In Onward, elven brothers Ian and Barley (voiced by Tom Holland and Chris Pratt) have a “magical” opportunity to spend more time with their late date but must embark on an action-packed quest to gather the components necessary to have a final moment with him. But when the boys’ fearless mom Laurel (voice of Julia Louis-Dreyfus) realizes her sons are missing, she teams up with a part-lion, part-bat, part-scorpion, former warrior—aka The Manticore (voice of Octavia Spencer)—and heads off to find them. Perilous curses aside, this one magical day could mean more than any of them ever dreamed.
Perfect for your next family movie night you’ll want to set aside some time tomorrow evening to enjoy this awesome and massively overlooked film that has an impressive 95% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
