European Launch Of Disney+ Leads To 5 Million New App Downloads
Though all of the Walt Disney theme parks are shuttered worldwide to combat the spread of the COVID-19 virus, we do actually have some good news when it comes to the Disney+ streaming network.
According to a recent piece in Variety, Disney Plus stormed it out of the gate yesterday in the United Kingdom and European markets on Tuesday as people are quarantined worldwide.
On March 24, Disney+ debuted in the UK, Ireland, Austria, Italy, Germany, Spain and Switzerland. On launch day, the Disney Plus app was downloaded 5 million times according to analytics firm App Annie.
We should be clear that the number of app downloads doesn’t necessarily translate into subscribers For instance, one subscriber does have the ability to download the app on multiple devices under one subscription. Each account does have the ability to set up seven profiles with access of up to four streams.
Yet any way you crunch the numbers, its good news for Disney Plus who know has a viable footprint in the European Market. This is on top of the 28.6 subscribers Disney’s streaming network has gathered in the US, Canada, Australia and New Zealand.
Going into 2020, Disney was the number 7 ranked non-gaming app by consumers worldwide. This means it’s behind Tinder, YouTube, Netflix, TikTok, Tencent Video and iQIYI.) However, these numbers are expected to grow now that the product has launched in Europe.
There are also still more launches to come. The France premiere was delayed by two weeks and will now be officially available on April 7th. Due to the COVID-19 outbreak, DisneyPlus India has been temporarily put on hold.
And speaking of the virus, here at MickeyBlog we reported earlier in the week that DisneyPlus launched in Europe with lower video quality. Disney said it was reducing bandwidth utilization of DisneyPlus by 25%
The Disney Plus service allows guests of all ages to stream movies and TV shows including those from Disney, Pixar, Marvel and Star Wars. The content released for Europe was largely the same as what was available during the US launch including 30 seasons of The Simpsons as well as the Star Wars hit The Mandalorian.
