A Quick Guide To All of the Films Coming To Theaters In Marvel Phase 4
It’s true Marvel fans, with the spread of COVID-19, we’re going to have to wait a bit longer before Phase 4 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe officially kicks off in theaters nationwide. We already shared the news with this week that the Black Widow is getting pushed back.
However, don’t despair. Once things are up and running again, there’s a lot to look forward to! As a matter of fact, Cinemark shared a brief rundown of all of the big cinematic releases expected to come out as part of Phase 4 and we couldn’t wait to share them with you as a reminder of the awesomeness to come!
Black Widow
We may not get to see Natasha on the big screen as soon as we thought but some things are worth waiting for right!? Scarlett Johansson will be returning in her role as Black Widow with a storyline that takes place after the events of Captain America: Civil War. The film picks up with Black Widow in Budapest where she meets Yelena Belova (Florence Pugh). In the film Black Widow must square off against the villainous Taskmaster who has the unique skill of copying an enemies combat skills on the spot. Cinemark calls the release of the Black Widow a curious way to start Phase 4 post Endgame but may be the way that Marvel sets up Yelena Belova who is supposed to be Black Widow’s successor.
No news yet on when the new Black Window premiere date will be but we promise to keep you posted as soon as we know more.
The Eternals
This will pull a brand new franchise into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. In the comic books, the Eternals are an offshoot of humanity created a millennia ago by an alien race known as the Celestials. The Eternals are very powerful (as a matter of fact Thanos is actually descended from the Eternals.) The specifics of the story remain under lock and key but what we do know is that an all-star cast has already be assembled. This includes Angelina Jolie, Salma Hayek, Kumail Nanjani and Brian Tyree Henry are all on board, as are Richard Madden, Don Lee, Lauren Ridloff and Lia McHugh. Chloé Zhao (The Rider) is directing.
The film is expected on open on November 6, 2020.
Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings
Simi Liu will take on the title role of Shang-Chi, Master of the Mystic Arts. This role was created for Marvel Comics in the 1970s. Shang-Chi is the son of a Chinese crime lord named Fu Manchu. For fans of all things Marvel, you’ll recognized the Ten Rings mentioned all the way back in the original Iron Man. The films will also introduce the real Mandarin played by Tony Leung Chiu-wai. Shang-Chi will hold the distinction of being Marvel’s first film with Asian actors in the primary roles and the first martial arts movie in the MCU. The film is being directed by Destin Daniel Cretton.
The film was originally slated to be released on February 21, 2021 but has recently halted production due to the COVID-19 virus which is sure to delay release. We’ll keep you updated once we’ve heard more.
Doctor Strange In The Multiverse of Madness
Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) is back in this sequel that is being hailed as one of the craziest Marvel films to date. Benedict Wong is slated to return as is Elizabeth Olsen in the role of Scarlet Witch. The trio will apparently journey to new dimensions and alternate realities! The fact that Master Horror Filmmaker Sam Raimi in the director’s chair indicates this won’t be your average Marvel movie!
The film is slated to open May 7, 2021.
Untitled Spider-Man Film
We were delighted to hear the news that Marvel and Sony came to an agreement over the production of a third Spider-Man movie with Tom Holland in the title role. This project doesn’t have a title as of yet but what we do know is that it will follow Doctor Strange. Holland also confirmed just over the past week that Zendaya will be coming back in her role as MJ. Fans of the franchise will know that Spidey is in a pretty rotten position after Far From Home so it will be interesting to see what happens next.
The film is slated to be released on July 16, 2021.
Thor: Love and Thunder
If you were a huge fan of Thor: Ragnarok you’re in for a special treat as both Chris Hemsworth and Tessa Thompson will be returning as Thor and Valkyrie. But there’s also an added surprise Natalie Portman will be returning in her role as Jane Foster and she’ll be more important than ever. This go-around she’ll wield the enchanted hammer of Mjolnir and with it the power of the Mighty Thor. That makes her a female Thor!
Watch for this film slated to be released on November 5, 2021.
Black Panther 2
Wakanda Forever! THOR 4 may “technically” be the end of Marvel Phase Four but Fiege has already given us a sneak peek of what is to follow. One of these is the much-anticipated sequel Black Panther 2. Though not much has been revealed about the film we do know that Director Ryan Coogler and star Chadwick Boseman will be back.
The film is slated to be released on May 6, 2022.
Guardians of the Galaxy 3
There’s still much to be learned about this project. However, one thing we do know is that after James Gunn split from Marvel Studios briefly last year he is back on track to write and direct the film. This means that the original Guardians Star-Lord (Chris Pratt), Gamora (Zoe Saldana), Drax (Dave Bautista), Rocket (Bradley Cooper), Groot (Vin Diesel), Nebula (Karen Gillan) and Mantis (Pom Klementieff) — will return as well.
While we don’t have a release date for the movie, Marvel has staked out three 2022 weekends any of which could be the GUARDIANS 3 release date: February 18, May 6, July 29 and October 7.
Captain Marvel 2
As with Guardians details about a Captain Marvel sequel remain a bit vague. What we do know is that Megan McDonnell (“WandaVision”) is writing, but a director is yet to be announced. We assume Brie Larson will star once again as Carol Danvers, whose cosmic powers make her one of the most formidable characters in the Galaxy. Lashana Lynch may return to play Danvers’s friend Maria Rambeau, and since Yonah Parris will play a grown version of Rambeau’s daughter, Monica, in the series “WandaVision,” she may well have a role in this sequel, too.
The studio hasn’t said anything about a release date yet but we expect it to be on one of the other 2022 dates we mentioned above!
Blade
Yup! Marvel is rebooting Blade, with two-time Oscar winner Mahershala Ali (Moonlight, Green Book) set to star. As of going to print no director has been announced and the storyline is yet to be revealed. It will also take one of those 2022 spots.
So even though we’re all wishing for a superhero to help out the world just now, moviegoers will be able to enjoy the Marvel magic for years to come. Keep following along with MickeyBlog and we promise to keep you posted for the latest Marvel news and updates.
