Movie Theaters Including AMC and Regal Close Doors Due to Social Distancing Regulations
All week we here at MickeyBlog have been sharing news about premiere dates for films like Mulan and Black Widow being postponed. Disney has halted production of several projects including Loki and WandaVision for their Disney+ streaming network. Today, we’re sharing the inevitable news that movie chains like Regal and AMC will also be shuttering their venues to combat the spread of COVID-19.
These closures are essential as part of the CDC’s recommendation that social gatherings should be limited to 10 people or less.
AMC announced today that they will be closed for anywhere between 6-12 weeks to help battle the pandemic.
In a recent piece that ran in People, AMC CEO Adam Aron said the following, “We are ever so disappointed for our moviegoing guests and for our employee teams that the new CDC guidelines that Americans should not gather in groups larger than 10 people make it impossible to open our theaters,” He added. “Still, the health and wellbeing of AMC guests and employees, and of all Americans, takes precedence above all else. We will continue to monitor this situation very closely and look forward to the day we can again delight moviegoers nationwide by reopening AMC movie theaters in accordance with guidance from the CDC and local health authorities.”
AMC, of course, has a large theatre in Disney Springs. Disney announced yesterday that they would be closing all Disney owned and operated restaurants and businesses at Disney World’s downtown shopping district with many private businesses following suit. Wine Bar George, House of Blues, Rainforest Cafe, TREX and VOID have all announced closures.
Another chain also closing all theaters is Regal. Mooky Greidinger, CEO of Regal’s parent Company Cineworld in a statement released to USA Today said, “It’s our goal to provide a safe and healthy environment for our employees and guests.” “At this time, we have made the difficult decision to close our theaters.”
