Former CEO, Bob Iger, confirmed at the annual shareholder’s meeting on Wednesday (March 11th) that Disney’s Song of the South will not appear on the Disney+ library.
Although Iger was speaking at the meeting, this information was in response to a question about Disney’s full catalog appearing eventually on Disney+. Iger stated at that time Song of the South would not appear.
The 1946 live-action/animated movie has taken much criticism for its controversial depiction of black people. The film is set on a Georgia Plantation post Civil War.
Iger stated the film “is not appropriate for today’s world” and “won’t be rereleased”. Some debate swirled around a possible disclaimer reading “This program is presented as originally created. It may contain outdated cultural depictions”. But, Iger further confirmed, even with a disclaimer, the movie would not be included. (Source: deadline.com)
