Hasbro Confirms that Coronavirus May Disrupt Manufacturing of Baby Yoda Toys
The “force” is not with Baby Yoda toymaker Hasbro. As Disney scurries to get ahead of the Baby Yoda merchandising trend, licensing has been handed out to toymakers like Hasbro, Mattel and more who have started offering pre-ordering on Baby-Yoda themed merchandise slated to come out later this year.
However, the current coronavirus outbreak could have an impact on the production of these highly anticipated toys according to a recent piece in the NY Post.
Though manufacturing hasn’t been stymied as of yet, in a recent interview with CNN, Jim Silver, an industry export said, “If things aren’t normal by the time June and July roll around, there will be shortages on a litany of toys. ”
The shortages will be largely a result of not receiving the resins used to make the products from China as a result of factories being shut and workers quarantined.
According to the NY Post, Hasbro has openly acknowledged that the virus could have a massive industry impact. “We are working to mitigate the impact of our manufacturing partner factories being closed longer than anticipated, as well as to reschedule the shipments we have not been able to make,” said their CFO Deborah Thomas.
And unfortunately the demand for these toys, due to the recent fervour around The Mandalorian on Disney’s new streaming network Disney+ remains high. For example, pre-orders for the animatronic toy (pictured above) that retails for $59.99 went up on ShopDisney.com at the end of last year and Disney completely sold out of their units in 24 hours.
