This week Bahamian female cadets received scholarships from Disney Cruise Line to attend the LJM Maritime Academy in Nassau. According to the report in Cruise Industry News, four scholarships were given to represent each of Disney Cruise Line’s ships. The scholarships will fund two years at the LJM Maritime Academy and include one year with Disney Cruise Line.
The female cadets who received scholarships all report goals to become ship captains and shipboard leaders. These incredible women are Christina Adderley, Emily Bain, Paula Greene, and Antoinique Lightbourn; all from the Bahamas.
Women in the Maritime Industry
Last year, Disney announced a new push to empower women to seek careers in the maritime industry. Minnie Mouse made waves when she joined the Disney Cruise Line as a captain, inspiring young women by promoting career opportunities in the cruise industry. Additionally, with the news that two new ships will be joining the fleet, there will be even more opportunities for strong female leaders.
The president of the LJM Maritime Academy made the following statement to Cruise Industry News: “Our purpose is to help cadets create meaningful paths in the maritime industry, shaping the future of both the industry and our country. We’re grateful to Disney for their continued support of the academy and for providing scholarships to these remarkable young women. We’re so proud of these cadets and are excited to see where the future takes them.”
This video from World Maritime Day explains how important it is that these female cadets are empowered to achieve their goals.
